What To Expect After Getting Braces
You’ve taken the first step toward a healthier and more beautiful appearance by getting braces at Smiles Orthodontics–congrats! Now you’re probably wondering: what should I expect after getting braces? The first week is a time of adjustment, and it’s totally normal to have questions or concerns. Don’t worry—within just a few days, your braces will start to feel like a natural part of your routine.
What To Expect the First Week with Braces
On day one, your new braces might feel a little strange—like there’s something bulky in your mouth (because there is!). This is completely normal and part of the adjustment process.
By the second or third day, you may start to feel some soreness in your teeth and jaw. This is also expected and usually means your braces are doing their job. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help ease the discomfort.
Tips for Making Your First Week with Braces Easier
Knowing what to expect after getting braces can make the transition smoother—and so can a few simple tricks to ease discomfort and help you build healthy habits from the start.
Stick to soft foods. Your teeth may feel tender during the first few days, so opt for soft, easy-to-chew foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, scrambled eggs, and pasta. Cold treats like frozen yogurt or smoothies can also help reduce soreness and inflammation.
Rinse with warm salt water. If your cheeks or gums feel irritated, rinsing with a mixture of warm water and salt can help soothe sore spots and promote healing. Do this two or three times a day, especially after meals.
Stay on top of oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing around braces takes practice, but it’s one of the most important parts of maintaining a healthy mouth. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and take your time. Consider adding an interdental brush or water flosser to your routine to clean between brackets and wires more easily.
Carry a braces care kit. Keep a small kit with orthodontic wax, a travel toothbrush, floss, and a mirror in your bag or backpack. That way, you’re always prepared for food stuck in brackets or a sudden sore spot.
What to Expect with Sore Spots
As your cheeks and tongue adjust to the braces, you might develop sore spots from where soft tissue rubs against the metal brackets or wires. One of the best tips for new braces care is to use orthodontic wax.
Here’s how:
Break off a small piece of wax, roll it into a ball, and gently press it over any bracket or wire causing irritation. Dry the spot first with a cotton swab to help the wax stick better. This creates a soft cushion and gives your mouth time to heal.
What to Expect If Something Breaks?
Occasionally, a bracket or wire may come loose. Knowing what to expect is important so you don’t panic. It won’t cause serious harm, but it can be uncomfortable or inconvenient. If something breaks, call our office right away so we can get you in for a quick fix.
To prevent damage, avoid hard or sticky foods like ice, caramel, popcorn, and hard candies. Even crusty breads can be risky! Stick to softer foods during your first week and cut anything firm into small, bite-sized pieces.
