Teen Braces

Braces can, of course, give beautiful smiles. In addition to that, long term data from the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) shows that untreated improper bites can result in a variety of problems:

  • Crooked teeth are difficult to clean and maintain proper hygiene; failure to do so can cause cavities & gum diseases.
  • Protruding teeth (commonly called overbites) are more susceptible to chipping, fractures and teeth loss as well!
  • Crossbites (commonly called underbites) can result in unfavorable growth, uneven tooth wear and can require complicated extractions/surgeries if not addressed sooner than later.
  • Open bites can result in speech abnormality issues.

Adolescence is a very common time to begin orthodontic treatment. By the time you are a teenager, you should have lost all of your primary teeth, and your permanent teeth should be fully erupted and ready to be adjusted if necessary.

It can be very helpful to start your orthodontic treatment while you are still growing, and sometimes earlier orthodontic intervention can help guide your teeth into the correct alignment as they grow. However, if a patient gets their braces off too early, the teeth may continue to grow and end up out of alignment, requiring another phase of braces. Your orthodontist will look at your dental records and take their own x-rays in order to make an informed decision about the best timing for your own orthodontic journey.

Many of our teen patients express concern about the way that braces look. Adolescence can be a very difficult time, and many teens feel an immense pressure to fit in and focus on their appearance at school and in social situations. While we understand that sometimes getting braces can cause some anxiety. However, in the long term they will be able to smile confidently for the rest of their life once that have that perfectly aligned bite! We believe that the ends are worth the journey. We also have several options available that are more discreet than traditional metal braces, such as ceramic braces or Invisalign clear aligner therapy. If your teen is concerned about how their braces will look, ask about their options!
