When black cats prowl and pumpkins gleam, you know it’s almost time for Halloween! We love the spooky season here at Smiles Orthodontics, and we want to help make sure those with braces enjoy a fun and safe Halloween!

Halloween Activities For Braces

Just because your child is currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, doesn’t mean that they have to miss out on any of the fun this year! Our team has put together a few ideas to try:

  • Halloween colored braces. Next time you come in for your routine visit with Dr. Gorantla or Dr. Sander, ask to change the color of the elastics to black and orange! This makes for a fun and festive Halloween smile!
  • Make treats at home. The good news is that those with braces can eat most baked goods! Betty Crocker has some great Halloween-inspired cake and cookie ideas that are safe for those with braces!
  • Have a Halloween scavenger hunt. Hide braces-safe candies such as Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Hersey’s Kisses and plain M&M’s around your house! This will entertain your family and you can even put a few spooky tricks along the way!

How To Keep Treatment On Track This Halloween

The most important things to remember if someone in your family has braces is:

  1. Avoid anything that’s too hard or sticky as these treats can result in broken brackets and/or wires! It feels like soon after Halloween, our emergency line starts ringing with complaints of broken brackets:) Remember, broken brackets aren’t an emergency as long as they aren’t uncomfortable; however being careful with your Halloween treat choices can help avoid these broken braces 🙂
  2. Remember to brush teeth and braces very well after eating a sugary treat. Since those with braces are more prone to tooth decay, it’s especially important to follow the proper oral hygiene routine after having sugar!
