Sleigh bells are ringing, the snow is glistening, and it’s officially the most wonderful time of the year! There’s always so many things to look forward to, such as quality family time, gift giving, and of course delicious holiday foods! If you’re currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, don’t be worried! You can still enjoy many of your holiday favorites this year. As long as you apply the same general rules to your holiday food choices, your smile will thank you!

Delicious And Braces-Safe Holiday Foods

Not all is lost this holiday season if you have braces! Favorites like turkey, fish, and ham are all perfectly safe to eat. So are soft pies, including pumpkin and apple. Soft candies are fine as well, as long as you brush your teeth soon after. The holidays are no excuse to forget your regime, though. Be cautious not to overindulge, and don’t forget to take great care of your teeth and braces!

If you’re currently undergoing orthodontic treatment with Invisalign, you have the luxury of eating whatever foods you’d like! However, it’s important to remember to remove your aligners before eating and to brush your teeth very well before placing them back in.

Foods To Avoid This Holiday Season

Even though it’s the holidays, the rules for wearing and caring for braces don’t change. Make sure to avoid foods that are overly hard and crunchy, or soft and sticky. These foods can get stuck in braces, detach a bracket, or break a wire. Check out our earlier blog for more specific instructions on what to eat and what not to eat while wearing braces.

Here are some examples of what to avoid during your holiday festivities:

  • Hard candies like candy canes
  • Anything with nuts like pecan pie, brittle, tarts, or cookies
  • Taffy
  • Caramel
  • Hard bread and cookies, like gingerbread
  • Cranberries

Those with braces need to be extra careful with sugary foods because they can get stuck easily. Sugars can have prolonged contact with the surface of the teeth, and as a result can increase the risk of damage or tooth decay.Watch out for sneakier sugar-loaded foods like cranberries, which can stain braces and teeth if they get stuck for too long.

Holiday Fun With Braces!

If you have braces this holiday season, you can show off your spirit by changing the color of your elastics! Dr. Gorantla would be happy to give you a festive smile by applying green and red elastics. We have many options for you to choose from, so be sure to ask next time you’re in for an appointment!
