To make life a little easier for our awesome vegans and vegetarians in Wichita, we’ve compiled a list of awesome plant-based restaurants and cafes that also offer braces-friendly options! Getting all your protein from crunchy nuts and seeds might be viable without braces, but it can be a little risky when you have delicate brackets and wires. Not to worry, we’ve got you covered. Check out our orthodontist’s top ten picks for braces-friendly vegan eats in the area!

1. Beautiful Day Cafe

2516 E. Central Ave., Wichita, KS 67214

A huge reason many people go vegan is because of the positive environmental impact it has on the world. True, one meatless might not make that big of a difference, but over a lifetime, being vegan can cut greenhouse emissions by a significant amount.

If you can’t quite commit to veganism yet, you can still make smart eating decisions that help the environment. By choosing to eat locally sourced foods, you can drastically reduce the number of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere from shipping and transporting food from around the world.

Beautiful Day Cafe on East Central St. actually specializes in serving fresh farm-to-table food from lush gardens and co-ops right here in Wichita! Our favorite braces-friendly items from their menu include the vegan breakfast burrito, grilled veggie burger, and veggie pita wrap. You can also count on any of their salads to be refreshing, delicious, and gentle on the braces.

2. The Kitchen

725 E. Douglas Ave, Wichita, KS 67202

The Kitchen is an adorable little bistro located at Union Station that effortlessly teeters the edge between home-style comfort food and artisanal fine dining. On the menu is a wide array of classic bowls, soups and sandwiches that can be easily customized for the vegan or vegetarian palate.

Though we have every intention of trying new dishes when we visit The Kitchen, we find always find ourselves ordering the vegan pasta, caprese sandwich, or vegan medditerranean bowl. All of these items are incredibly hearty and tasty, but they’re also made of ingredients that are soft enough for orthodontic appliances. If your braces are feeling especially sensitive, we recommend trying one of the soups of the day.

3. Meddy’s

Wichita locations in Greenwich, Downtown, and Harry

Before Carl’s Jr. and Burger King launched their meatless burgers, there was Meddy’s. Founded in 2014, Meddy’s has been serving healthy vegan and vegetarian fast food-style medditerranean cuisine to the community for years. Since then, the restaurant has expanded to three locations in Wichita! The casual restaurant makes their food from scratch and even boasts a separate vegan and gluten-free menu to cater to its customers’ needs.

If you haven’t already experienced Meddy’s, make sure to try their fluffy pita, lentil soup, baba ganoush, garlic potatoes, and grape leaves. They are melt-in-your-mouth delicious and most importantly, totally braces-friendly.

4. Lotus Leaf Cafe

251 N Washington St, Wichita, KS 67202

Lotus Leaf Cafe is committed to providing only the highest quality, organic, vegan foods to its customers. The little shop has a limited but tasty seasonal menu of all-natural, sustainable foods. If it’s your first time, we recommend getting the creamy red pepper zucchini noodles, tacos vegetarianos, or mean green with tofu creme. They also have some excellent desserts and beers to end the meal on the high note!

If you’re worried about getting veggies stuck in your braces after a meal, try bringing a proxy brush, orthodontic flossers, or floss threaders to clean your teeth after you eat. These are all easy, compact tools that you can use to quickly remove anything that’s left between your wires or brackets.

5. Wheat Street Dogs

Serving Wichita and surrounding areas

Craving a hot dog? You no longer have to fantasize about the perfect, juicy hot dog. It’ll come to you! Wheat Street Dogs is a food truck that specializes in making handcrafted plant-based hot dogs of every flavor. They’ve reimagined the hot dog game, creating amazing flavor combos such as the Banh Mi Dog, the Coney Island Dog, and the spicy Prairie Dog. Best of all, all the hot dogs are meat-free and braces-friendly.

Rather than getting the meal deal with crunchy chips, we advise those with braces to bring their own appetizers. Some excellent braces-friendly sides to pair with hot dogs include mashed potatoes, macaroni salad, and coleslaw.

6. Kind Kravings

Serving Wichita and surrounding areas

Another one of our favorite food trucks in the area is Kind Kravings. The plant-based pop up offers a healthy spin on typical comfort foods. If you see this food truck parked around your neighbor, don’t pass up the opportunity to try one of the items on their sustainable, cruelty-free menu. Because they run a small scale business, the menu is pretty limited, but that just means you’ll have the opportunity to try everything they offer! Currently, they’re serving cinnamon or “Sinnamon” roll pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and a Santa Fe plate for breakfast. For lunch, you can help yourself to their Asian noodle salad, BBQ sammich, or green chile mac (our fave).

In our opinion, the best thing about Kind Kravings is the plant-based protein! Tempeh, tofu, seitan, and veggie patties are usually some of the most braces-friendly protein options available. They are always super tender and crispy without being too hard, chewy, or overcooked like regular meat.
