Foods to Avoid When Wearing Braces

What a mess! These messy foods get stuck in wires and brackets, and are definitely snacks to avoid:

  • Corn chips
  • Pretzels
  • Cookies
  • White bread (especially hot dog buns)
  • Popcorn
  • Licorice
  • Potato chips
  • Animal crackers

Avoid sticky situations with foods that make cleaning your braces almost impossible:

  • Gum
  • Taffy
  • Beef Jerky
  • Caramel
  • Fruit roll-ups
  • Candy bars

Crunchy foods can also “crunch” and break your wires. Ouch! Here are some crunchy foods to avoid while wearing braces:

  • Apples
  • Carrots
  • Hard candy
  • Nuts of all varieties
  • Ice

These hard foods are fine as long as you cut them up first. Just don’t bite into them with your front teeth:

  • Sub sandwiches
  • Burgers
  • Corn on the cob
  • Pizza
  • Fruit
  • Raw vegetables
  • Hard rolls/bread
